All the New York guys on the list will appreciate this story:

Jazz Journalist Bill Campbell sent this to another list.

Buddy DeFranco told me a story on Thanksgiving about 5 years ago:

He and his family were vacationing in the Catskills 60+ years ago and there
was a combo playing. The leader announced that his clarinet player was sick
and so Buddy asked if he could sit in. He did, and tore up the place.

The leader asked him to come back the next night and he did. After each
round of thunderous applause, the leader said "Ladies and Gentlemen, Buddy
Frankel. He did this repeatedly as the 17 year old DeFranco wowed the crowd.
At break, Buddy said; "Sir, my name is Buddy DeFranco."

The leader said, "not up here kid, not up here.

Cheers,
Steve Barbone
