Norman Burbank passed away, Thursday morning, 11/22/07. For several weeks, he had been in the hospital, after suffering a stroke. For many years, Norman played tuba with the Hombone Kelly's Jazz Band and with other groups.

Having spoken with Norman over the past months, I was aware of his dire circumstances. This is a sad loss.

Over the years, I've played dozens of gigs with Norman along with Rocco and the whole bunch. I must admit that at first, I was not sure about Norman's playing. I knew that he was a fine instrumentalist, but I questioned his sometimes over-energetic style.

Having worked a long series of jobs at the New Orleans Family Restaurant (North Branch, NJ) I had a chance to put in some intense time, side by side, with Norman. We played every type of tune, much of which we had never played before. After only a short time, our styles seemed to naturally coalesce.

I have often used Norman on my gigs. My repertoire includes many off-the-beaten-track tunes, that nobody has ever heard (much less played) before. Early on, I learned that Norman had no trouble, with any tune. His phenomenal ears enabled him to pick up any the chord changes, on the spot. Since he had a marvelous sound along with good time, and a two-beat sense then synchronized with mine, he was a fine asset every time.

It was always a pleasure to have Norman's positive mood, on the bandstand. When I'd call him, even during his serious illnesses, he'd end up cheering me up.

I already miss Norman the person, and certainly Norman the player.
