Kansas City Style
We've got a couple of new players in the original version which I
lead. A lovely 30 year old female trombonist named Cindy Leiby who
while still learning our jazz book, is outstanding and she also sings
beautifully without a trace of chick singer attitude. And a kick ass
drummer named Mike Piper. His time/accents are impeccable and his
solos are a thing of beauty as he solos in AABA format so you hear the
melody. Very explosive drummer who adds a lot of energy to the band.
What is Condon/New York/Kansas City style? Well, its a mix of my early
influences; swing rhythm w/ amplified guitar which sometimes acts as a
fourth horn,, plus what was played at Nicks in the 50s, plus what
Conrad Janis evolved into when he put black, blues based, Kansas City
style, swing players into his New Orleans Band before he left NYC.
Done in solo oriented, improvisational, Condon style.
Geez, maybe it's free Dixieland? Then again, as Branford Marsalis
said, about Cecil Taylor, maybe: "It's just bullshit in Ab." <grin>
Cheers,
Steve Barbone.
